Of late, hackers have been attacking businesses and institutions at large. It has been reported that the U.S. government agency that gathers information for federal employees also became a victim of the cyber attack on Thursday. Reports claim that the computers of the agency were breached into, thus resulting into some data being compromised.
The cyber attack which was targeted at the government agency was massively done by some unknown hackers, causing the compromise of about 4 million current and former employees. Reuters received information from a U.S. law enforcement source that the attack is being believed to have been facilitated by a foreign entity or government. The attack is suspected to have originated in China.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it had launched an investigation, and it gave an assurance that those who committed the crime shall pay for it. “The FBI is working with our interagency partners to investigate this matter,” the bureau said in a statement. “We take all potential threats to public and private sector systems seriously, and will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.” The bureau gave an assurance.
U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff pointed out that there have been several cyber attacks affecting millions of Americans. “The last few months have seen a series of massive data breaches that have affected millions of Americans,” Schiff said. He then termed the current attack as one of the most disappointing ones since the attack was done on federal computers. “It’s clear that a substantial improvement in our cyber databases and defenses is perilously overdue,” Schiff added.
It’s evident that hackers aren’t stopping until proper defense mechanisms are built to protect the information stored in the computers. The improvement or building of stronger defense will not only safe gourd the federal computers but will also protect businesses and other entities in general.
